How did "Sugarloaf Ridge" get its name? Sugar wasn't always sold in the neat paper packages that you buy at the supermarkel these days. Before the turn of the 20th century, sugar came in loaves that looked something like upside-down ice cream cones. The grocer just broke off pieces for his customers. So, many western mountains and hills, including the ridge at the southern edge of this park, were named after the familiar "sugarloaf." The park is located northeast of Kenwood in the Mayacamas Mountains, sited between the Sonoma and Napa valleys. Hike Distance: 12 miles. Climb: 3,220 feet. Time on trail: 5 hours, 15 minutes. A map of the park's LOCATION.
Part of this hike took place on the still-to-be-completed Bay Area Ridge Trail (GO HERE), a 400 mile trail that will eventually circumnavigate the greater Bay Area at the higher elevations.
"When I was growing up in Berkeley, I used to think of East Bay wild places as wilderness with training wheels...
Experience elsewhere has taught me that those wheels were only in my mind. Trails where I once held my father's hand are no less worthy destinations today, especially as they are being connected to form the 400 mile Bay Area Ridge Trail."
